After a year of research polling horticulturists, landscapers, garden centers and gardeners, and two months of city-wide voting, then a proposal to LFUCG Council which resulted in an overwhelmingly positive vote, Lexington-Fayette County now has an OFFICIAL CITY FLOWER!!
Purple Coneflower, a well-known and loved native perennial was the top winner in the vote done last summer, and so now we are happy to promote it as the new Official Flower.
Plant it in a bare spot, plant it in masses, just plant it in 2020!
Congratulations! I have been wanting to do this for our town for quite a while, but it keeps getting postponed. I suspect that someone will eventually come up with it as ‘his’ or ‘her’ idea when running for town council. It will not be an easy process. I explained that our town flower and town tree must either be native or of cultural significant. No one gets that, and most want some obscure flower that they saw on vacation in some obscure topical destination, merely because they happen to be intrigued by it.

They are prettier than my favorite option for Los Gatos, which is ‘cattail’. (It happens to be native.)
